Influenced by Joy Division, Interpol and cigarettes after sex, Meena is an alternative rock duo. Previously described as “a dystopian film soundtrack”, William Crook (vocals and guitar) and David Foulger (synth) have a rather unique sound. We speak with William about their new single ‘Porch’ and much more!
Why did you decide to enter the music industry?
Good question.
Can you tell us about your single ‘Porch’?
To me, it’s a piece of atmospheric dark pop that hooks people in as an opening song on the EP and shows what Meena is all about.
What was the recording and writing process like?
The song came about by accident in a sense. I was recording a completely different track then I bumped into a few notes – the rest of it slowly wrote itself. The ‘Donnie Darko’ samples were a natural fit and added early on.
The recording process was fairly straightforward as we had played the song many times before and I knew exactly how I wanted it to sound.
Does the single have any significant meaning for you?
Sure!
What do you hope people take from your music?
I hope it makes them feel better, or the same if they’re already feeling good.
What is more challenging – melody or lyrics?
Melody. I’m not too concerned about lyrics. I prefer things to be more abstract and open so the listener can take their own interpretation away.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
Fear.
How would you describe your sound?
Dark purple reverb.
What do you think is the best way to discover new music?
Probably new music playlists or scanning through Soundcloud or Bandcamp for recently released stuff. There are some gems out there which have barely any plays!
What does the future hold for you?
Good things, I hope. I aim for a full-length record next year and playing shows in the meantime.
Do you have a message for our readers?
Hope you like the track!
