British singer-songwriter Tom Moriarty has released his fifth studio album, Chapters, marking a significant new chapter in the career of one of the UK’s most respected independent singer-songwriters. The new collection combines the heartfelt songwriting that has defined his work with a striking new emphasis on electric guitar and classic rock influences.
Over the years, Moriarty has built a loyal following thanks to his emotionally resonant songwriting and distinctive voice, earning praise from the Press Association as “a performer of rare talent” while Q Magazine highlighted his brand of “thoughtful roots rock.” His vocals, often compared to a blend of Eddie Vedder’s raw intensity and Ray LaMontagne’s soulful warmth, have become one of his defining trademarks.
Following the success of his debut album Fire In The Doll’s House and its critically acclaimed successor The Road, which attracted admiration from artists including David Crosby, Chapters sees Moriarty pushing beyond the acoustic folk-rock sound that established his reputation. Drawing on techniques developed during his studies at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, the record embraces elements of Southern rock while maintaining the reflective storytelling that has remained central to his music.
The album opens with Enemy Inside, an energetic rock track driven by powerful guitar work and emotionally charged vocals. It signals the album’s more muscular sound while reflecting the personal struggles and experiences that have shaped Moriarty’s recent years.
Elsewhere, On The Road Again offers a deeply personal account of a life spent travelling across the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Los Angeles, capturing the excitement, freedom and lessons gained through years on the move.
Across its tracklist, Chapters balances hard-hitting rock with intimate acoustic performances. Songs such as Hard Timesand Leaving It All Behind explore resilience and conflict, while She’s Like The River and One Day provide quieter, reflective moments. One of the album’s standout recordings, You Are My Island, showcases Moriarty’s emergence as a lead electric guitarist, moving effortlessly between blues-inspired phrasing and soaring rock solos influenced by musical icons including BB King, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Lindsey Buckingham and Prince.
The album also boasts an accomplished group of musicians. Drummer Evan Jenkins, known for his work with Eric Clapton and Van Morrison, joins bassist Thibault Guillen, violinist Georgie Leach, Hammond organ player Rich Milner and backing vocalists Louise and Melanie Marshall. Moriarty himself contributes piano alongside his vocals and guitar performances, creating a rich and expansive sound throughout the record.
Reflecting on the creative direction behind the album, Moriarty said:
“It was time to add electric guitar into the mix. I felt it was time to use the skills I’d learned at MI in LA to express myself and emotion in my music. Times had changed and in some of the songs I wanted to express more anger and aggression as a reflection of how the world had changed.”
The journey to Chapters has been far from straightforward. After suffering a career-threatening accident and later sustaining serious injuries to his left hand in a dog attack, Moriarty channelled those experiences into songwriting that explores perseverance, recovery and hope.
Produced by Tristan Longworth, the album spent years in development and was originally intended for release in 2020 before the pandemic forced plans to be postponed. The extended delay ultimately transformed Chapters into a deeply personal statement that reflects both Moriarty’s artistic evolution and the resilience required to bring the project to completion.
With its blend of accomplished musicianship, honest lyricism and newly expanded sonic ambition, Chapters represents the next stage in Moriarty’s career and introduces listeners to a fresh dimension of his songwriting and musicianship.
Chapters is available now on all major streaming platforms and in physical formats.
