On today’s episode of ‘Beneath the Surface’ I’m joined by Toronto’s newest Afro-pop & Dancehall superstar, Lexxicon! He joins us following the release of his single, ‘Power Over Me’, the first track in an exciting run-up to the Tropicon Islands album.
– What first got you into music/who inspired you to make music?
A songwriting workshop I attended during University was what inspired me to make music. I then started reading songwriting books online and started to practice creating songs with Type Beats and from there spent time trying to figure out my sound. I was always a fan of music, I would be sure to keep up to date with new albums, and I was a heavy LimeWire addict when I was younger. I have always looked up to Rihanna since Pon De Replay and she made me think it could be possible.
– How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
I would describe it as Afro-pop with Dancehall and Hip-hop influences. As there is a lot of mixed influences in my music but they will all have your head bopping.
– What does your creative process look like?
It just looks like conversations with producers and then me writing figure out want to say, then recording and seeing if I like how it sounds. Then it’s all just revisiting and editing and fine-tuning. It takes time to get a good song done so I just follow it until I feel it’s done.
– Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
If I could have anyone, I would love to Collaborate with Rihanna & Stefflon Don & Sean Paul That would be a dream track and complete some life goals.
– What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
Be yourself and be confident in that and don’t let anyone tell you different. If you wanna be a hoe, be a hoe, if you wanna be celibate, be celibate, if you wanna get married, get married. Stop waiting for other people to approve what you want, your approval is all you need.
– What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
I just take a break and watch Netflix or just go to sleep, to me, writer’s block is a signal that I need a break and I just listen to that. Sometimes doing nothing does something.
– What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
Next for me is to keep pushing this album and then continue experimenting with my sound and have it just grow into something more.
