NEW MUSIC: ettie – pepsi

Based in London, UK, ettie (yes, a small ‘e) is a singer-songwriter who, in her own words, “drinks a lot of wine and has a lot of feelings”. Known for her engaging and brutally honest songs, ettie weaves intoxicating sonic webs drawing you into her genre-bending sound. Having performed in many London venues, including Slaughtered Lamb and Nambucca, ettie is building a strong reputation and loyal following. The latest release from this intriguing musician is ‘pepsi’ (yes, a small ‘p’).

The follow-up to her well-received single ‘hello, i’ve got anxiety’, ‘pepsi’ moves away from an indie-pop sound to a more commercial pop style. Reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys and The Human League, ‘pepsi’ could easily fit among the synth-pop tracks of the 1980s; however, it is her distinct vocals that make the song really “pop”. Using the synth-driven sound, her Alanis Morrisette meets Heather Baron-Gracie vocals slap a 21st-century twist on things.

Lyrically, ettie remains as constant as ever writing meaningful and genuine songs relevant to life as a young adult in 2020. When asked about the track, ettie said: “the song is about not having a dazzling connection with someone, but deciding to go with it anyway; like when you ask for a Coke and they ask if Pepsi is okay? It’s not exactly what you ordered, but it’s a start.” Moving, amusing and rather catchy, this new single demonstrates ettie’s versatility and innovativeness as a modern artist.
