In Conversation with Rachel Gleddie

Hailing from Edmonton, Canada, Rachel Gleddie is a singer-songwriter with a lot of talent and soul. Influenced by different genres ranging from folk to dark-pop, Rachel’s music is intriguing, compelling and captivating. We speak with Rachel about her upcoming debut EP Silhouette, future plans and discovering new music.

Why did you choose to enter the music industry?

Music is something that has always been a part of my life. At first, it was just a hobby, a way to process life events and a way to hang out with friends. However, a few years ago the interest I had for music started leading me down a different path. I enrolled in a university music programme, I started gigging and I started becoming more serious about writing music. So, to answer the question, there’s not really one single reason why I entered the music world – it was just a natural progression of pursuing a passion.

What can you tell us about your release Silhouette?

This is my debut EP! I’m very excited to be releasing music for the first time, but it’s also a bit nervewracking. As for the sound of the EP, it’s a bit of a blend of different genres and combines my love of acoustic instruments with some more modern elements. Lyrically, this EP is a reflection on some of the more difficult aspects of life and it was written to be an honest, yet still somewhat hopeful, take on these experiences.

What was the recording and writing process like?

Writing the music for this EP was an invigorating challenge. I wanted to create music that people could both relate to and enjoy, while at the same time making sure that I didn’t sacrifice any authenticity along the way. I also learned a lot about myself during the writing process which is always an interesting time.

As for the recording process, I absolutely loved it. I worked with three amazing producers – Brad Simons, Brandon Unis and Brad Smith – to bring this project to life. Each one of them brought something unique to the table and I really enjoyed working with them.

What do you hope people take from the EP?

Silhouette is an honest reflection on the bittersweet tastes that flavour our lives. This EP is not just meant to be a captivating listening experience; its primary focus is to be like a friend who understands your struggle and who will sit with you through it. My ultimate goal for the EP is that it will instil a sense of hope within the listener.

Describe your music in three words.

Contemplative. Genuine. Bittersweet.

What do you think is the best way to discover new music?

There are so many great ways to discover new music. I personally still love the old-fashioned way of having friends recommending their favourite artists to me. I also love finding the smaller, more “off the grid” radio stations and discovering must that way.

Do you have any future plans?

To keep improving as a songwriter and a performer.

What advice do you have for any person planning to become a musician?

Work hard at every project you take on and be respectful and kind to the people you work with.
