In Conversation with Plural of Nothing

Hailing from Sweden, Plural of Nothing is the solo project of singer-songwriter Nils von Heijne. After collaborating with renowned producers for his singles ‘Change The World’ and ‘Hold My Hand’, Plural of Nothing is an exciting new sound for people to discover. We had a chance to speak with Nils about his single ‘Change The World’, discovering new music and much more!

Why did you decide to enter the music industry?

Music has been a calling for me as long as I can remember, but it has also represented one of my deepest fears. Expressing myself musically has been so scary that it took my 25 years to overcome the fear and finally release my music. So, in essence, music is my process of healing and becoming more whole as a human being.

Can you tell us about your single ‘Change The World’?

This is the very first song I ever released and it symbolises many things for me. It’s both about how we change the world by changing ourselves, and how we truly need to change the world we currently inhabit. Change starts from within and I feel the need to communicate that for myself and whoever happens to listen.

What was the recording and writing process like?

The song wrote itself in 30 minutes and I was simply there to channel it. The recording took longer though and it only happened because the amazing producers Sebastian Furrer and Filip Bekic came in to put their mark on it.

Does the album have any significant meaning for you?

The release marks the end of 25 years of fear for me and is also a starting point for me exploring how to bring music to my surroundings as medicine. I am no longer scared to express myself and there’s a sense of relief I wish everyone gets the opportunity to experience.

What do you hope people take from your music?

My intention with my music is simply to be true to who I am and I hope that will shine through. What people take from listening to my music is not for me to say or even hope for. I’m simply grateful to whoever gives it a listen.

What is more challenging for you – melody or lyrics?

I’m not a very skilled musician; I have no real training and can barely play the guitar. Melody and lyrics tend to come automatically together for me, but my challenge is to bring the music beyond simple guitar chords. So, arrangements and production is definitely my weak spot.

How do you keep yourself motivated?

To be honest, I don’t try to keep myself motivated at all. I rather try to honour whatever state I’m in and follow flow when it appears.

How would you describe your sound?

Simple singer-songwriting.

What do you think is the best way to discover new music?

Listen to a lot of different types of music and visit random concerts.

What does the future hold for you?

Continued exploration – that’s all I can say for sure.

Do you have a message for our readers?

Thank you for being you and living your life the way you are.
