Hailing from the Faro Islands, but currently based in Copenhagen, Turið is an indie-pop artist with superb instrumentation and the voice of a siren. She recently released her sixth single ‘What’s Left Of Me’ in July exploring the issues of mental health and alcohol abuse. We had a chance to speak with Turið about ‘What’s Left Of Me’, future plans and discovering new music.
Why did you decide to enter the music industry?
As a child I always dreamed of being a singer; I was singing all the time and loved to express myself through music. Music has always touched me in a special way and I can’t stop creating, so I feel it was a natural process for me to enter the music industry.
Can you tell us about ‘What’s Left Of Me’?
‘What’s Left Of Me’ is about mental health and struggling with bad drinking habits. When I wrote the song I was in a very bad place mentally. It felt like I’d hit rock bottom and it was really an eye-opener to me.
What was the recording and writing process like?
I wrote the song about a year ago and wrote most of the song in an hour. I finished the lyrics a few months ago and recorded the final vocals in my bedroom.
Does the song have a significant meaning to you?
The song has a very special place in my heart. There are so many feelings connected to it and it makes me feel sad, proud and happy at the same time.
What do you hope people take from your music?
Music is very therapeutic for me and I hope that my music has the same effect on people. It can be so powerful and my biggest goal is to make an impact on other people.
What is more challenging for you – melody or lyrics?
Lyrics are definitely something that I can struggle with sometimes, whereas melodies come to me very easily. There’s nothing better than a good melody!
How do you keep yourself motivated?
I practice and keep myself going all the time. Sometimes when I don’t feel motivated I push myself to be creative anyway. Some days are better than others and I just accept feeling that way.
How would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as dark, melancholic and honest. My Faroese roots definitely have an impact on my sound that has a little bit of a Nordic twist.
What do you think is the best way to discover new music?
The best way to find new music is through movies! I love, love, love how a song and a movie scene can fit perfectly together and the emotional impact of music in a film.
What does the future hold for you?
I’m not really sure what the future holds for me. I’ll continue to create and release a lot of music and I’ll see where my music will take me.
Do you have a message for our readers?
My message for the readers is to do whatever makes you happy and stay true to yourself. I have struggled a lot with insecurity and trying to fit in, but the more I let go and show my inner self the more I get back. It’s so freeing.
