Hailing from California raised in Texas and now residing in New York City, Eline Chavez is a groundbreaking rock songstress ala Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge and Joan Jett. Along with guitarist Chris Vargas and bass player Chris Rodriguez, Eline has founded the energetic and inspirational rock band Onism E. We took time to speak with Eline about their new single ‘My America’, staying motivated and much more!
Why did you decide to enter the music industry?
I would say it wasn’t a decision to go into the music industry as much as it was a desire to do what I love. I have always wanted to write and play.
Can you tell us about your single ‘My America’?
With everything going on right now I knew that our voice needed to be included in the conversation. I couldn’t pretend that it wasn’t affecting us in some way. We are a Latinx rock band and I have been harassed for the colour of my skin. As a writer and artist, I believe wholeheartedly what Toni Morrison said, “this is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language; that is how civilisations heal.”
What was the recording and writing process like?
For ‘My America’ the process was sparked by a picture of a small child on his father’s shoulders. He was wearing a superhero costume while holding a bag of snacks in his hands. What struck me were all the police officers around them pointing guns at protesters. That image will always haunt me.
The song came quickly and despite being apart, the guys and I were able to work virtually to finish it faster than expected.
What do you hope people take from your music?
Hope. The world is often dark and scary, but there are better days ahead. We want them to know that they are not alone.
What is more challenging for you – melody or lyrics?
Both. It depends on what sparks the idea.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
The world keeps me motivated; how it affects me, my family and my friends.
How would you describe your sound?
We’re a mix of everything we have ever listened to – a little bit rock with soul and a little bit folk with funk. I’m a storyteller that finally found some wonderful musicians to get my songs out there in a way that makes us just different enough to be unique.
What does the future hold for you?
I hope 2021 lets us get out there to play shows. As far as 2020, we have an EP on the way.
Do you have a message for our readers?
Stay strong out there. Wear a mask. Tell the people you love that you love them, and be kind to each other; we are all fighting some battle.
