In Conversation with Continental Breakfast

Founded in 2019 in Berlin, the neo-soul group Continental Breakfast is making waves with their sincere and soothing music. The type of music you imagine playing in those really cool jazz bars. We had a chance to speak with the band about their latest “isolation sing”, ‘Home’.

How did Continental Breakfast form?

On a full moon at mid-tide when the crabs retreat to the lukewarm twilight sea in Friedrichshain.

What can you tell us about ‘Home’?

No matter how great the feeling of being out your own is and how huge a part it plays in growing, there’s still always this longing we have for somewhere we once felt comfortable. The song is supposed to show that going out and losing everything on your own takes courage and pays off. Somewhere you can start rebuilding from scratch.

What was the writing and recording process like?

Like when a taxi driver takes you down the wrong way and you say “hey bud, what’s all this”, but it ends up saving you ten bucks. Exhilarating!

Does the track have a specific meaning to any of you?

Every song is full of personal stories spoken out in a way, but this one is definitely some kind of nostalgic love story.

If you could give new musicians advice, what would it be?

Play as much as you can; that’s the best way to find your sound and voice to say what you have to say which, in the end, is the goal.

Do you think being based in Berline plays a role in your music? Also, do you think a person’s environment can influence their work?

Berlin definitely allows us to make any kind of music we feel necessary. There is a feeling of being whoever you want to be in this city that rubs off on people and allows you to focus on the important stuff.

Do you sing in the shower?

It depends. Who’s shower?

Where do you hope to be in five years?

On tour in summer without a face mask.

Describe your music using three words.

Lucid, thoughtful, groovy.

What do you do when you’re not creating music?

There’s so much you have to do these days outside of just writing and playing. The music world keeps us busy pretty much 24/7 in one way or another.

Do you have a message for our readers?

We hope you enjoy all of our endeavours! Please do come find us on the internet and drop us a line if you want to get in touch. At the end of the day, it’s all about connecting in some way, shape or form.
