INTERVIEW: King of Nowhere

King of Nowhere is the brainchild of Danish musician and producer Mikkel Fabricius.

His latest single – You Don’t Get To Keep The Dog – is spectacularly cinematic – juxtaposing upbeat melodies and sweeping orchestral strings with despondent, down-trodden lyrics.

I had a chat to Mikkel to find out more about where King of Nowhere came from and what he’s got coming up next…

Hey Mikkel! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi. I’m a Danish musician / songwriter / producer. 32 years of age. A one-man army – for better or worse – that likes to write anthemic tunes with grounded and despondent lyrics.

What’s behind the name King of Nowhere?

I don’t know when I first thought of it. I know it’s a part of an ‘alternative’ title for a Radiohead song. So maybe it stems from there.

I liked it because it reminds me of my recording and distribution process. The idea of being the sole owner and proprietor of this music, that no one really sees or listens to. It makes sense in my head, but it’s difficult to articulate.

You’ve just released your new single – You Don’t Get To Keep The Dog. Can you tell me about how the song was written and recorded?

It’s actually an older song of mine. Written to a friend who was going through a break-up.

I think I first tried to record a version back in 2015-16, but I never got it right. I’m not sure I have now, but now I consider it done.

My process is basically always the same. Get an idea, usually around a piano, and just start recording, one layer at a time.

If you could tour with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

I really don’t have any particular musicians I’d like to tour with. I’ve never toured, by the way.

I think I’d like to have my closest friends with me though. That would be the best.

What’s coming up next for you? Any live shows coming up?

I haven’t any live shows coming up. I hope I can still get some gigs late in the summer, but none for now.

I have an EP coming out late summer. Right now, I’m working on a video for my next single, which will be out within the next couple of weeks.
