Following up their debut single Christian Boys, the band have just released new track Treaddur Bay – a zealous, anthemic number exploring the highs and lows of love, betrayal and masculinity in the modern age.
Ahead of their single launch show at The Waiting Room, I caught up with the band for a quick chat…
Hey Mur-Man! Introduce yourselves to our readers…
Hello! We’re Mur-Man, an indie rock band from North London. Our songs are catchy, our live shows are sweaty and our dress sense is at times questionable.
Your new single Trearddur Bay is a bittersweet, anthemic track exploring themes of masculinity, romance and betrayal… it’s got a great throwback sound, reminding me of bands like Echo and the Bunnymen. What’s the story behind the song?
David (singer): Trearddur Bay is about growing up in a little village in Anglesey, North Wales. It touches on my parents’ divorce and then my first, and I suppose only real, heartbreak. For years it affected me and [I] told myself not to fall in love again. It became a mantra I suppose, which I wanted to use at the end of the song.
Abbi (drummer): The song means a lot to us as a band – it’s the first one we played together when we formed early last year. It helped us click as a group and I’d say it’s one of the most enjoyable songs for us to play live.
You’re celebrating with a single launch show at The Waiting Room N16, London on Saturday 2nd Feb. Looking forward to the show?
All: You bet we are! We are a high energy band and love the live shows. There will be a fair bit of cheap prosecco flowing and will be VERY SWEATY. We’ve got our amazing friends Uncanny Valley Girls supporting us, so it’ll be a fun party for sure!
I loved the video for your first single Christian Boys. Is Trearddur Bay going to be as equally spectacular?
All: It’s going to be a different vibe but very entertaining nonetheless… guess we can’t make David wear a wig in every video! For our first few videos we really wanted to push the boat out and see how far we could go with very little money but lots of creative ideas. Our third single will be out in spring and we have some big plans for that one too!
What’s been your favourite musical experience so far?
David: Seeing Nick Cave. I also met him once in Brighton, lovely chap.
Abbi: Marika Hackman’s last album launch with The Big Moon at the Old Blue Last.
Jules: I’ve seen King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in Glasgow like a year ago. It was massive.
Jon: King Gizzard or Idles last year would be high on my list. There’s nothing better than a lively crowd and an energetic band.
If you could tour with any band in the world, who would it be?
All: 100% it’d have to be Idles. They have a great team energy and seem like incredibly humble people. Their live performances are insane and their audiences always seem super responsive, though Jon and Jules might get moustache-envy…
Name one record everyone should listen to…
Uncanny Valley Girls – We Ride Bikes, UV Girls have somehow managed to combine heavy metal with r’n’b and it works, like salted caramel.
What’s coming up next for Mur-Man?
Jon: We’re likely to release an EP later in the year, next week we’ll be supporting Estrons and Lucia at Scala and we’re headlining Live Nation’s emerging acts evening in March.
Other than that we’re hoping to do some bigger shows in the summer and hopefully hitting the road on a tour later this year too!
