Finding sick new music is just the best, isn’t it? Turtle Tempo head honcho Dan forwarded me Dutchkid’s new EP “Empires” this week – a band I’d not heard of before – and for the first time in a long while, I felt sad for not discovering these guys sooner.

“Empires” EP is best suited to fighting off the post-festival and pre-autumn lurgy with morning coffee in hand, kicking off the EP with “Wildflower”. An arpeggiated retro synth is reminiscent of nights I’ve not slept, juxtaposed with the ‘joie de vivre’ of spritely beats and melodies, enough to have you on your feet and ready for the day at 6am.
“Young Lovers” twinkles and sparkles much like any given M83 song (only catchier) and “Glow” brings us back down to earth with some funky instrumentation not found elsewhere on the “Empires” EP and will have you shamelessly jamming to yourself on the morning commute.
The title track seems strangely understated compared to the other songs. It glitters a little post-chorus, but doesn’t seem to hold a candle to the highs “Wildflower” and “Temporary” bring – perhaps it’s also to do with my natural aversion to any sounds inspired by Mura Masa – in which case, please disregard the above opinion and continue streaming the living daylights out of this outstanding piece of work.
My sleepy and ill-informed personal preferences aside, Dutchkid’s “Empire” EP is cleverly structured and masterfully brought to life by drawing upon their inspirations and creating something beautiful, the likes of which you’ve never heard before. Even if you do nothing else with your day, just promise you’ll listen to this EP.
BRB, popping out to get me a Dutchkid t-shirt….
