NEW MUSIC: Neon Dreams – Sick of Feeling Useless

Canadian alt-pop duo Neon Dreams release timely anthem “Sick of Feeling Useless”.

Frank Kadillac and Adrian Morris have been making music together for five years, so they’re no strangers to what is (at times) a tricky industry. For a long time, they have channelled their experiences into song, a process that they find cathartic and empowering to their non-conformity. However, after a meditative detox, the duo removed an album’s worth of songs off streaming services and began the Neon Dreams project anew. Since then, they have focused on releasing a new album full of uplifting songs about overcoming adversity, and “Sick of Feeling Useless” follows suit.

Neon Dreams’ sound can’t be pigeon-holed – the band describe it as “if Adam Levine and Gym Class Heroes made a band that was influenced by early 2000s and late ‘90s inspirational coming-of-age movie soundtracks”. They have carved out a genre of their own, characterised mainly by huge hooks and catchy melodies, and “Sick of Feeling Useless” is yet another feather in their cap, ready to leave you with the chorus running rings around your brain. A sing-song melody (almost similar to that of a nursery rhyme) is beautifully contrasted with the frustration expressed in the lyrics and the powerful vocal delivery. Morris’ drums thrash away throughout, adding extra energy to what is already a song full of ‘joie de vivre’.

“We were discussing with our good friend and collaborator Nathaniel Motte from the band 3OH3! about how it’s easy to feel helpless…like nothing we do matters that much,” Kadillac explains of the writing process, “then Nat said, ‘ya know…I think everyone is just sick of feeling useless.’ It hit so hard with me because I felt that way my whole life growing up, I felt useless until I broke out of my shell.” Neon Dreams see themselves as the vessel for the message that everybody deserves a place to belong, and this band what to become a home for all the misfits out there. A great song with a great message.
