Hello friends and welcome to yet another jam packed Beneath The Surface session. Today I am joined by the Slovenian songstress Ina Shai who has recently released new single + video ‘What Is’. Ushering in RnB at its finest, we get to know this talented young artist as she invites us into her world.
What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
It must have been my grandma who always sang to me. I loved her to bits. Also, music has always been an escape for me into this imaginary world. I was bullied quite a lot growing up so writing songs and imagining I’m performing on stages was the only thing making me happy. It’s so funny how it all started but I’m grateful for it as music is still my biggest emotional outlet.
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
Soulful and sultry R’n’B filled with catchy melodies and deep, meaningful lyrics.
What does your creative process look like?
It’s very different each time. Sometimes I get an idea for a song when walking home or when on a bus so I need to make sure I record it on my phone before I forget. Other times I start with piano or guitar chords and play around with vocal melodies and lyrics. I also love to co-write with other musicians and producers who bring fresh energy to a session and introduce a different angle to my songs so it never gets boring or repetitive.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Beyonce – thank you universe!
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
Well, this message goes together with my latest single and that would be to always love yourself as only then you can truly love someone else. Also, life is short so make the most of it!
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over writer’s block?
Watch an emotional movie or a documentary that gets me thinking about love, relationships and all the inequalities in the world.
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
Lots more music and visuals are coming in the next months so I couldn’t be more excited about it.
