Yes – I hear it – but Philippine is an artist that creates entirely outside of anyone’s expectations. She can’t be confined to comparisons and genres. It may not come as a surprise that Philippine’s roots lie in Country music, her melodies catchy and lyrics disarmingly honest. Tremolo guitars ring out accompanied by a taste of the vocal hook as a precursor to a stripped-back verse. Philippine’s delicate voice is complemented with percussion comprised of sampled found-sounds, leading us into a huge chorus of driving beats, pulsating synthesizers and lush layered vocals. There’s a strong sense of modern Pop present throughout the song, from the electronic instrumentation to the candid nature of the lyrics, and it is beautifully juxtaposed by the ‘je ne sais quoi’ of Philippine’s innate otherworldliness.
