A combination of Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks and Foo Fighters, Wildpack are a talented team breeding their own brand of indie-rock. Despite each member being from a different part of England, Wildpack was formed in Bristol and has seen much success since they came together in January 2020. We had a chance to sit down with Josh Coates (rhythm guitar and vocals), Howard Hooper (lead guitar), Callum Houghton (bass) and James Luker (drums) to speak about their latest single ‘Nose Dive’ and much more.
Why did you decide to enter the music industry?
Music is our biggest passion collectively and by entering the music industry we are able to connect with people and form a bond on an emotional level. In another way, we also don’t want to be in the industry but we love to perform and connect with people live and the music industry is the way to do that and grow.
Can you tell us about your single ‘Nose Dive’?
‘Nose Dive’ is basically a short story about growing up in a small town and what impact that has on creativity and your mental health. It’s also a very straightforward song lyrically and is literally about being on a destructive path and escaping from your hometown.
What was the recording and writing process like?
Recording was quite simple. It was essentially just four hours in a studio where we recorded it as we did it live. The writing process was Josh starting with the first verse and then eventually a chorus came. We worked on it in rehearsal and it came together quite quickly and naturally.
Does the single have any significant meaning for you?
It does for all of us, but slightly differently. Essentially we all wanted to leave our hometowns and start something new, hence why we came to uni.
What do you hope people take from your music?
Enjoyment, fun at a gig and the ability to relate.
What is more challenging for you – melody or lyrics?
Lyrics for sure because of self-criticism.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
The love of the music and the satisfaction when people enjoy.
How would you describe your sound?
Still in the progress of defining our sound, but we just play music we like.
What do you think is the best way to discover new music?
Gigs and streaming services.
What does the future hold for Wildpack?
More gigs and more recording, but we’re not sure. We can only hope for the best.
