Hastings alt-folk band Snake Eats Boy unveil ‘slice of melancholia’ in the form of new single “Early Mournings”.
Ten years after Snake Eats Boy’s conception in rural Kent comes the release of their delicate and melancholy song “Early Mournings”. It took a move to Hastings, the union of local songwriters and producers and a global lockdown to bring this alt-folk collective to publish their music online, and boy are we glad they did. New songs in the spring were uploaded at an almost alarming rate to Snake Eats Boy’s Soundcloud profile, with “Early Mournings” likely to be the first of many made accessible on streaming services.
Inspired by the likes of Elliot Smith, Conor Oberst and Will Oldham, there is a haunting tenderness to the lyrics of this track – telling tales of insomnia-induced panic attacks, alienation and the disenfranchisement of today’s youth, the songwriting hits close to home. This is subject matter that I might usually suggest only folk-noir buffs could resonate with, but Snake Eats Boy possess an innate ability to make their little niche accessible to anybody who listens, much like Isaac Gracie. Guitars drenched in reverb with the addition of some distant ambient noise provide a simple and effective bed for crestfallen vocal melodies, creating a soundscape laden with warmth and darkness.
These are exciting early days for Snake Eats Boy’s first releases, already championed by BBC Introducing. We look forward to hearing what they have in store for release next – if you’re looking for news on future releases, be sure to check out their links below.
