Australia-based DIVEBAR YOUTH releases brand new single “Obsess”, an indie bop to reflect a hardihood mentality.
DIVEBAR YOUTH is the solo project of Vinnie Barbaro, who is no stranger to the Australian music scene, having played in multiple bands before deciding to go it alone last year. “Obsess” is true to Barbaro’s brazen and unabashed approach to songwriting that he is renowned for, proving popular with the tastemakers at Tripe J’s lunch show, who placed the song on rotation.
Recorded in a lounge with some friends, “Obsess” captures an authentic and raw sound which pays no mind to the common misconception that the best music is recorded in million-dollar studios. One of the greatest joys in life is listening to a song that sounds as though it was great fun to record, and Barbaro captures this exact feeling within this track of such high energy performance throughout. The vocals are delivered with passion and vitriol alike, whilst skipping drums and guitar riffs provide the perfect backdrop.
I must admit, I’m a sucker for a mid-song time signature change, and this is exactly what Vinnie Barbaro graces us with after the second chorus. A brass section leads us seamlessly up a staircase from the grungy basement venue to a smart jazz lounge – no easy feat to pull this off in an indie bop, but if there’s anyone who can do it, DIVEBAR YOUTH can.
