INTERVIEW: Dom Youdan

Having migrated to Sydney from London, singer-songwriter Dom Youdan delves into past memories of unrequited love with his new single Is Your Lover Still Cool.

Delicate vocals tinged with tender emotion swim amongst a sea of electronic orchestration that softly swell into a dreamy soundscape. Bittersweet lyrical quips punctuate every verse.

Keen to find out more about life in Australia, his writing process and influences, I had a chat to Dom to find out more…

Hey Dom! Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Sure can. Hey gang, my name’s Dom – I make music, pour my heart out on a daily basis, and generally try to have an awesome time in the process.

You’ve just released your new single – Is Your Lover Still Cool. Congrats! What’s the story behind the song?

It’s really as much about growing up as it is about falling in love.

Basically, I wanted to look at unrequited love in a really honest, slightly humorous and reflective way. I was an absolute geek growing up and this song speaks to that, but it also looks at all the things that used to matter and wonders how important they really are.

Where was the single recorded?

The song was recorded in Byron Bay in this gorgeous beach shack studio with Jack Gray and Robert Conley (who are both incredibly talented human beings).

I see you’ve relocated to Sydney. What’s the music scene like over there compared to London?

I’m genuinely amazed how insanely talented everyone is over here. The scene is a little bit smaller, but this means there’s a lot more support from the music industry in general.

Personally, I find Australian music pretty insane at the moment. There are some artists really defining their sound and inspiring globally like Julia Jacklin, Courtney Barnett, Dean Lewis and Troye Sivan. And that’s just scratching the surface – it’s a privilege to be part of it.

If you could tour with any band / artist in the world, who would it be and why?

Well, I’d probably give the fan boy me the ultimate experience and support Panic at the Disco during a Pretty Odd album renaissance. Though if I could tour with Joni Mitchell and duet on A Case Of You, well… that would be lovely also. Needless to say, I’m a fan of multiple genres.

What’s been your favourite musical experience to date?

Wow, that’s an extremely difficult question. I’m going to go with watching Hot Chip at Benicassim festival in unbearable humidity, having the time of my life. It’s easier to answer as a fan.

As an artist, my favourite moment is probably when you’re able to silence a crowd with your first note, it’s pretty wonderful to get that immediate connection.

Have you got much planned for the rest of the year? Any live shows coming up?

This year is going to be a bit cray cray. Next single is out in almost a month (yikes), then I’m touring Sydney and Melbourne, which I’m about to announce. The single launch for Is Your Lover Still Cool just happened and it was a blast.
