We had a chat with indie surf quartet Dutch Criminal Record about Netflix, celebrity encounters and the pineapple on pizza debate.
The West Sussex quartet consists of three vocalists which take the lead between their plethora of tracks in Riordan Hanan, Joe Delaney-stone & Sam Thrussell. Drummer Joe Frampton completes the band’s lineup.
If you had to pick, what would you have a criminal record for?
Frampton: Stealing the Crown Jewels.
Rio: Entering the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour.
Since forming several years ago in the same music class, you’ve played many shows, but where was your first?
We played at our secondary school battle of the bands but our first show outside of school was at our friend Emily’s dads birthday party which was a great kick start. Our first gig at a proper venue was at the Chichester Inn in our hometown!
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
It’s not really a ritual but we usually just do a quick vocal warm up together normally by singing some McFly or The Beach Boys. We try to remember to do a social media post as well…
You released a belter of an EP in Waiting On The Weekend in 2018, what can we expect to see from DCR in 2019?
Thanks very much! We’ve got a few singles planned, the first one – Graduate is out on the 8th March. We’ve just come off our debut tour and we’re already planning more shows so hopefully it will be a busy year.
Where do you weigh in on the pineapple on pizza debate?
As you would expect from a question of this kind it has split the band in two. Frampton says “if you put pineapple on pizza please stop listening to our music” which is a tad on the strong side, Rio on the other hand loves it and says it’s the perfect sweet and savoury mix. Sam will eat it but would never choose it unless it’s the only pizza available.
What’s your favourite song to play live?
We all probably have different opinions on this as it changes from time to time. Corona is one of those that we don’t seem to get bored of which is nice.
What’s your dream 5 band festival lineup?
Frampton: Stornoway, Boy Pablo, Bombay Bicycle Club, Dog is Dead and The Maccabees (bringing a couple out of retirement in the processes)
Rio: Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Van Morrison, Stornoway and Jamiroquai
Sam: The Strokes, Fleet Foxes, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Stornoway (there’s a pattern emerging)
Joe didn’t send us his over but he would want Stornoway for sure.
Have you had any celebrity encounters?
Rio has had the most famous celebrity encounter out of all of us – he served Tom Cruise, as his personal waiter, for a meal when working at Goodwood!
Frampton met some of The Magic Gang recently, Taylor from Local Natives we met a while back, Joe had a chat with Yannis Philippakis from Foals in New Cross and Sam and Joe bumped into the drummer from Flyte outside of a Tesco’s store.
Also it wouldn’t be complete without saying we met the whole of Stornoway at Truck Festival in 2014!
Finally, do you have any Netflix series recommendations?
Frampton: Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Rio: The Last Kingdom, The Punisher, Peaky Blinders (obviously) etc.
Sam: Very old school, I still watch DVDs although recently enjoyed the Remastered documentary about Sam Cooke the other day and intending to check out some of the rest of the series.
Joe: The Ted Bundy tapes, they’re very freaky.
