Now we’re all now firmly buckled up and ready to take on 2018, we can now reflect and glance outside of our rear view mirrors at the epic tracks which dropped in 2017, and will be forever be carried lovingly throughout our lives. Here’s our top five favourite releases.
‘Call Me Out’ – Sea Girls
When I stumbled across Sea Girls and saw that the London-based quartet only had less than a thousand of Spotify plays, I thought I had discovered a gold mine. I almost felt like calling up the police because it was criminal to witness how such a cool, classy and very clearly musically experienced band was so obscurely known.
Thankfully, support from the gigantic likes of BBC Introducing was always only on the horizon, within just a handful of months Sea Girls sold out The Lexington, as well as a sold out Omeara show this February to come. Things are well and truly on the up for these guys. You should well and truly expect to see them on festival stages in 2018.
‘Thunder’ – Blonde Maze
Hearing this for the first time whilst lying down carefree on a Turkish beach was probably the best possible timing. Even more incredible to recognise that it was the vocals of Blonde Maze – the moniker of US-based electro-pop artist Amanda Steckler who we first discovered upon Antarctica.
I wouldn’t be too surprised if Thunder took a tonne of sleepless stormy nights to perfect before hitting the ‘upload’ button. The synthetics flawlessly collide together to make what can only be described as an electronic piece of genius.
‘Too Good’ – Marsicans
Marsican’t these guys make a bad tune? Honestly this single is too good (see what I did there?) for our ears. It’s firmly up there as one of Marsicans most emotionally constructed releases alongside Absense. It’s great to see that finally the Leeds lads are out on a pretty big headline UK tour.
It feels like the last year was jam-packed with touring, drumming up a bigger fanbase by playing as the main support to the likes of Clean Cut Kid, Hippo Campus and Jaws. Hopefully they put Terrapin back on their setlist otherwise we’re boycotting. Or maybe we’ll just play it during the interlude at all our Turtle Tempo Presents shows – tickets for all of our shows can be found on DICE by the way. Cheeky plug.
’Cathy Come Home’ – Flyte
Flyte have been around since 2014, and they raise eyebrows with their modern twist on their 60s influenced sounds. The way the London band delve deep into the issues of homelessness, domestic abuse and parental responsibility in Cathy Come Home is admirable, unconvential and a breath of fresh air for songwriting.
If a song can make you think and be aware about a variety of problematic topics as well as being musically incredible like this quartet are, then I think Flyte are more than deserving of featuring in our top five.
‘Hometown’ – Luna Bay
Luna Bay are one of the snazziest bands around, boasting an honest, feel-good anthemic sound with choruses that stick with you like velcro – which has been covered in glue and cellotape. You get the jist. Gavin from Gavin & Stacey even attended their first London headline show, that’s how high profile they are.
If the single that followed – ‘Little Amsterdam’ is anything to go by, there’s no sign of these absolute bangers stopping. Mash not included.
