While we eagerly wait for a debut EP from singer-songwriter Marna, we’ll just have to settle for her 5 For Friday selections for now!
The singer-songwriter who hails from South East London played her first ever live gig at Sofar Sounds earlier this month. Her debut single ‘Crossfire’ takes a somewhat minimalistic approach which enhances Marna’s incredible vocals. Here’s her picks:
Jonathan Higgs is basically the archangel of acapella vocal (around the 3:50 mark) and everything else that’s good in the world. Totally obsessed with this whole album. Sit down and properly listen, it will give you LIFE.
Good Shot, Good Soldier – Everything Everything
Always the best remedy for a “fuck it” mood.
That’s Life – Frank Sinatra
Our MIA’s a badass and I love her a lot. Very into my parrrdy music recently, and she’s in every one of my playlists and “Bring The Noize” is BIG.
Bring The Noize – MIA
Actually, this is cheating slightly because the first version of this I heard (and subsequently cried to for about a fortnight when I was fifteen) was Birdy’s.
Then when “Farewell, Starlite!” came out last year, I realised that it’s actually Francis’ work of art, and listening to his original recording on Spotify felt like a punch in the stomach in such a good way. Those last few chords are the ones that send my heart sinking to the soles of my feet every time. Feels very final.
I’ll Never Forget You – Francis and the Lights
This has been on my ‘Recently Played’ since 2013 now. Brooding and chock-full of jealousy and insecurities. Just how I like my men.
Take A Fall For Me (ft. RZA) – James Blake
