Daudi Matsiko has been making a name for himself recently. His collaborations include electronic acts Booka Shade and Kyodai. While an appearance at Red Bull Music Academy, and tours with Keaton Henson, GoGo Penguin and Portico Quartet has given the singer greater exposure. Making it a good time to release an EP.
Indeed, the record is a reissue of his first two, self-released EPs, “The Lingering Effects Of Disconnection” and “A Brief Introduction To Failure.” The eight tracks have been combined for his first release on Naim Records.
Matsiko’s songs are sparse and his lyrics confessional. Armed only with an acoustic guitar, he tells his story while lovingly fingerpicking his instrument of choice. The first single “Take Me Old” is a fine example of the singer’s delicate songwriting ability.
On opening track “Home,” the tone of the guitar cuts through the silence perfectly. It rings out with dazzling brightness, therefore settling nicely on the ears. While “You Can Do Better Than Me, But I Hope You Don’t” is a bold and honest breakup song.
In conclusion, it’s easy to imagine these songs in a live environment. With the guitar and lyrics working together to hypnotise the audience into complete silence. This is a record that will cleanse the soul; a musical tonic after a heavy weekend.
