Salad Days (not to be confused with Mac Demarco‘s album) kindly took time out of their busy schedule to answer a few questions I had for them.
The ‘indie grunge punk‘ band are already making quite a name for themselves on the Birmingham scene with countless performances at O2 Academy 3 and other venues in the area and I wanted to know a little more about the band:
What are all of your names and instruments you play?
Jack Ensor – Drums
Lara Silvera – Bass
James Simpson – Lead Guitar
Elliot Stone – Vocals (with the occasional scream) and Rhythm Guitar
Where are you all from?
We are all from different parts of the West Midlands, Jack’s from Cosely, James and Lara from Stourbridge and I’m from Kinver.
What’s the story behind your name of ‘Salad Days’?
We had another guitarist before James who came up with it. When we were trying to come up with a decent name for the band, he suggested the name ‘Salad Days’, which is the title to one of Mac Demarco‘s albums. We thought it sounded cool, and when we found out the actual meaning of the term (the period when one is young and inexperienced) it stuck.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration as a band and why?
Nirvana maybe. Each member of the band has their own unique taste in music so we all bring a lot of different influences to the table, but Nirvana is a band we all think is great. The rawness and emotion of Nirvana’s music is something that we all can look at and say “wow, they’re f****** great.”
Where was the first gig you played?
We played our first gig at Base Studios in Stourbridge, in front of about 10 people.
Favourite song to play live, and why?
“You don’t know what’s going on”. It’s the craziest song in the set and a great song to jump around to.
Any band you would like to be as big as?
I don’t think we have one, as long as we could make a career out of it then I think we would all be happy.
What are your future goals as a band?
We have recently recorded an EP which we are going to release at some point, other than that just playing bigger and better shows and learning some new songs.

We’ve played with a load of different bands in the Birmingham music scene, Underground Empire, Sugarthief, Lost at Home and Exhailers are good ones to check out.
