NEW MUSIC: Ollie Wade – Hero

I’m one of those people who can become all ‘gooey’ and cry at the end of a film or good tune. I don’t know what it is but, for some reason, I can become very emotional when listening to music or watching a romantic movie. So, when I hit the ‘play’ button on Ollie Wade’s single ‘Hero’ I knew I need to get the tissues out.

Ollie Wade is a 25-year-old singer-songwriter from Winchester, England. He began his career as a vlogger uploading covers to his YouTube account. Before he knew it he had a growing online audience with a strong fanbase. Ollie released his debut single in 2015 and his debut EP Falling in 2016. It wasn’t long until he began attracting attention from multiple publications, as well as being named in the Top 10 UK iTunes Singer-Songwriter Charts. The latest addition to his repertoire is the heartbreaking track ‘Hero’.

Written as a tribute to his father, ‘Hero’ is a vulnerable and desperate single. While a message to his father, ‘Hero’ focuses on anxiety and the significance of this mental health issue in relationships. The funny thing about anxiety or depression and its role in relationships is that not talking about it makes things worse. Internalising the pain can result in rifts and misinterpretations of actions. Ollie tried to comfort his dad with ‘Hero’.

‘Hero’ is an odd track with various contrasting features. For instance, the lyrics are brutally honest but sincere. The melody is calm and steady but with a turbulent rush of emotion. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, but the overall effect is wistful and poignant. Combining the skills of an old-school crooner with the savvy of a 21st-century kid, Ollie Wade can stand out of the crowd and breed his own brand of pop music.
