Joshua Burnside brings us the second single from his debut album ‘Ephrata.’ ‘Blood Drive’ is set in an apocalyptic world and follows two people who represent Orwellian power-hungry characters. Although the music is soft and comforting like Jose Gonzalez, the story within the lyrics, perhaps a warning, is stark and terrifying.
Burnside’s fingerpicking style is both rich and sparse, combining well with the melody and avant-folk style. He uses layered vocal harmonies and simple recording effects like delays to add extra depth. This prevents the song from becoming the classic singer-songwriter routine. As a result, it’s a stunning piece of work that’ll have you reaching for the repeat button. Of course, the album follows suit.
