Laurel Smith drops first dark-pop single of the year, ‘Out the Cage’

North London’s rising pop starlet, Laurel Smith drops her first single of the year, the highly anticipated dark-pop single, ‘Out the Cage’. The new single & its accompanying music video follow on from Laurel’s previous track, ‘Game Over’ released during the winter of last year to positive reviews all around, introducing Laurel as a young and innovative singer-songwriter with bags of potential.

A seasoned songwriter and recording artist, Laurel Smith has been writing songs since the age of sixteen. In 2019, Smith unveiled her debut single, ‘Mona Lisa’ followed by a string of successful singles and an EP project ‘Mortals’. With each passing year, Laurel has continued to adapt her sound and aesthetic,  consistently honing her craft and evolving her brand. She has carefully carved out her place in an ever-crowded industry and proceeds to turn heads at every corner.

For her latest offering, Laurel Smith returns to her gritty, dark-pop roots presenting fans with a gripping and action-packed narrative storyline in the form of a movie and video game inspired track about breaking free from mental and physical restraints, allowing yourself to live life to the fullest. By blending subtle trap beats with East Asian instrumentation and catchy, pop-style lyrics, Laurel invites a modern twist to a traditional oriental sound resulting in a unique soundscape that reflects the old-school Kung-Fu movie influences seen in the video whilst also staying true to the distinctively hazy, moody-pop vibe that Laurel has come to be known for.

Speaking on her release, Laurel Smith shares:

“‘Out The Cage’ is a song about breaking out from your constraints, both physical and mental. Although it can be interpreted in any way, when I wrote it I created a story around a bored housewife, falling out of love with her husband, she fantasises about tying him up and leaving him to be a badass assassin in a video game type world, roaming the city at night and living a life of unpredictability and excitement” – Laurel Smith
