INTERVIEW: Jolé

London-based singer-songwriter Jolé reflects on devotion with his brand new single All I Need.

A gorgeously atmospheric track built upon layers of vocal harmony and soaring string arrangements, All I Need strikes a perfect balance between poignant, contemplative songwriting and anthemic pop.

I caught up with Jolé ahead of his headline show at The Waiting Room, London on 28th May to find out more…

Hey Jolé! Congrats on your beautiful new single All I Need. What’s the story behind the song?

Thank you. The song is about working through relationships. It talks about what you can give somebody you love whilst needing that in return to make things work.

What was the writing / recording process like?

It was quite natural really. Usually it starts with just a voice note. I’ll then send it to my producer and we will build it up in the studio. I didn’t really do any demos for this record, just went with my gut on most things!

Who are your main musical influences?

I’m a huge lover of pop music, but I grew up on guitar music and folk. I grew up on a mixture of The Beach Boys and Van Morrison, but recently have been listening to a lot of Astronauts Etc and Big Red Machine.

I see you’ve spent some time performing in other bands. Have those experiences had an impact on your solo career?

Definitely. It’s taught me a lot about songwriting by myself and how important and valuable it can be to bounce off other people’s ideas. I love co-writing and I think that comes from my time in bands.

If you could perform in any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

Red Rocks! I love being outside and it looks beautiful.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given as a musician?

Just do your own thing. Don’t copy others, but borrow ideas and make them your own. Also, don’t compare yourself to others!

What’s coming up next for you? Any live shows?

My album is out on 24th May and I am playing a bunch of shows in the lead up to that (mainly Sofar Sounds).

The big one for me is my album launch, which will be on the 28th May at The Waiting Room in London. It’s my first headline show!
