Welcome, welcome one and all to another beautiful Beneath The Surface feature. We are joined today by the lovely Lexie Palms. Sweep those eyes below as we spill the tea…
What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
I think I’ve always had a massive interest in music from a really young age. At 3/4 years old I would join my dad and listen to his vinyls in the upstairs room. I’ve sadly ruined a few of his speakers cause I would just poke them trying to understand how the sound was coming out. I’ve also copied every single sound I could hear from a car beeping to a door shutting so I guess that was the universe giving me a hint.
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
I’d say I’ve written most of my recent songs at a stage of reflection after I went through a rough time mentally and they’re just basically me coming to terms with the fact I just have to open up and be honest with myself and the people around me. This then comes together with production which kinda reflects those emotions in sound. I think genre wise, it’s a bit of a blur as every song is different but I’d describe it as fresh, full and textured with a hint of soul, pop and jazz.
What does your creative process look like?
This really varies but it’s always, always melody before lyrics. I think what I really enjoy is creating things from scratch and crafting sounds. It can start for example with a bass line that just pops in my head and it can take ages to perfect that one instrument sound wise. From then it’s just building up the track and adding texture with vocals.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Definitely, definitely James Blake. He’s a musical genius and incredibly creative with songwriting.
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
hello friends, thanks for listening to my lil bedroom creations :))))
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
Always take a break if you’re feeling stuck. Empty your mind and fill it with something else so you can press refresh when you come back to that one song. Might get some inspiration on the way.
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
Currently working on my upcoming EP midstream which will be out end of this year and have just been enjoying working with other artists and collaborating!
